About the seminars

Mobilities in/of crises: Critical investigations comprises a series of ten seminars that will take place at the British School at Athens (BSA) and at the French School at Athens (EFA) in collaboration with the British Institute at Ankara (BIAA) with funding from the Balkan Futures network, which has supported research in the field of Balkan regional studies and beyond, and the EFA. These seminars will function as a forum for discussion across disciplines, national borders and territorial boundaries. They will begin in January 2018 and will run till the end of May 2018, and will be hosted by the BSA and the EFA. Please see the program regarding the exact dates and the location of each seminar. 

These seminars focus on issues connected to the notion of mobility and the way this is shaped through public representations, everyday understandings and misconceptions of crisis. For this reason, we ask: Is mobility a concept that should be put in crisis, and/or a concept that should be investigated and be thought as a result of multiple crises? For example, how does movement and crisis get mediated, defined and reconfigured by race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, ability and religion? Overall, what kind of social subjects/subjectivities emerge as a result of both mobility and crisis?

Putting both the notion of mobility and crisis under critical investigation, rather than taking their meaning for granted, the seminars also aim to address issues related, but not limited, to the following questions:

On the one hand, does the meaning of mobility change in times of wars and revolutions but also in the face of the worrying (re-)emergence of nationalisms, xenophobia, neoliberal governmentality and the intensification of border controls? In other words, does mobility signify flexibility, adaptation, the questioning of borders, identities, and belonging, or is it the violent result of these processes? Also, how can we understand mobility in non-movement, waiting, stillness and stuckness? On the other hand, considering that ‘crisis’ has been recently used either to describe capital controls, austerity measures and life’s overall impoverishment, or to signify poverty and loss as a result of forced migration, we ask: what are the epistemological and methodological misfits of using crisis as a way to understand movement, institutions, forced displacement, precariousness and dispossession?

By asking the aforementioned questions, the seminars aim to engage critically with issues connected to the current economic and refugee crises, presenting original work and/or works in progress of prominent academics. Contributions include epistemological critiques of the “global South”, “Europe”, (neo)colonialism and (neo)fascism; historical investigations with a micro- and macro-level approach that put forward continuity and change throughout the 20th and 21st centuries; current analyses on technologies of governance and the effect of biopolitics in migration-refugeeness; social and urban perspectives on the so-called “migration crisis”; gender and queer analyses of citizenship and democracy; anthropological analyses of political ecologies and animal mobility; critical approaches on the relation between art, war and the political. The complexities of these issues will be addressed in each seminar by two invited scholars, leading the way for an open discussion with the audience. Policy-oriented panels and art exhibitions will be selectively included in some of the seminars (please check announcements for each seminar for further details).

Mobilités en crises : investigations critiques est une série de dix séminaires organisée par la British School at Athens (BSA) et l’École française d’Athènes (EFA), en collaboration avec le British Institute at Ankara (BIAA). Financés par le réseau scientifique Balkan Futures et l’EFA, ces séminaires se réaliseront dans les deux Écoles entre janvier et mai 2018. Ces dix séances visent à la création d’un forum de discussion entre différents champs scientifiques et espaces géographiques. Les séminaires se focalisent sur des thématiques liées à la notion de mobilité et, plus précisément, à comment elle est perçue à travers les représentations publiques, les perceptions quotidiennes et lesdites « mésinterprétations » de la crise. Ces thèmes introduisent différentes questions : la mobilité est-elle une notion qui doit être critiquée et/ou peut-elle être analysée comme le résultat de crises multiples? Dans quelle mesure la mobilité et la crise sont-elles définies et reconfigurées à travers la race, l’ethnicité, la classe, le genre, la sexualité et/ou la religion ? A travers le questionnement à la fois des notions de mobilité et de crise, les séminaires visent à ouvrir les questions suivantes :

D’une part, comment l’étude de la mobilité change en temps de guerres et de révolutions dans la longue durée et, aujourd’hui, dans le contexte de la montée des nationalismes, de la xénophobie, de la gouvernance néolibérale et de l’intensification des contrôles frontaliers ? Autrement-dit, la mobilité est-elle liée à la flexibilité, à l’adaptabilité, à la critique des frontières, aux identités et au sentiment d’appartenance ou est-elle le violent résultat de ces processus ? Nous voulons aussi nous demander s’il existe de la mobilité dans le non-mouvement, dans l’attente, l’immobilité et la fixation?

D’autre part, en tenant compte du fait que la notion de crise a été récemment utilisée soit pour décrire la mainmise du capital, les mesures d’austérité et l’appauvrissement presque généralisé, soit pour redéfinir la pauvreté et la paupérisation comme des conséquences des migrations forcées, nous souhaitons nous demander quelles sont les difficultés épistémologiques et méthodologiques de l’usage de la notion de crise pour comprendre et analyser la mobilité, les institutions, les déplacements forcés, la précarité et la dépossession.

Avec ces questionnements, les séminaires ont comme objectif d’interroger de manière critique des thématiques complexes  liées à deux crises majeures actuelles : celle économique et celle liée aux réfugiés. A cette fin, nous proposons la présentation d’études, en cours ou achevées, menées par des chercheurs/chercheuses confirmé(e)s. Spécifiquement, les présentations exposent des travaux critiques des notions de global South, de « l’Europe », de (néo)colonialisme et de (néo)fascisme ; des études historiques aux échelles micro et macro qui soulignent les continuités et les ruptures aux XXème et XIXème siècles ; des analyses de la gouvernance technologique et de la biopolitique du phénomène migratoire et des réfugiés; des examens de la crise migratoire dans l’espace urbain et social des villes dites « d’accueil » ; des analyses de la citoyenneté et de la démocratie à travers une approche genre et queer ; des études anthropologiques des écologies politiques et de la mobilité animale ; enfin, elles exposent des approches critiques au croisement de l’art, de la guerre et de la politique. Chaque séminaire sera abordé par deux chercheurs/chercheuses invité(e)s qui ouvriront aussi le débat avec le public. Certains séminaires seront étayés par des représentants d’ONG et accompagnés d’événements artistiques ou de projections de films. Merci de bien vouloir vérifier les annonces des séminaires. Ο κύκλος σεμιναρίων Κινητικότητες της κρίσης και σε κρίση: Κριτικές διερευνήσεις διοργανώνεται από τη Βρετανική Σχολή Αθηνών (BSA) και τη Γαλλική Σχολή Αθηνών (EFA), σε συνεργασία με το Βρετανικό Ινστιτούτο της Άγκυρας (BIAA). Τα εν λόγω σεμινάρια αντλούν χρηματοδότηση από το ερευνητικό δίκτυο Balkan Futures και τη Γαλλική Σχολή Αθηνών και θα πραγματοποιηθούν στις εγκαταστάσεις των δύο Σχολών από τον Ιανουάριο μέχρι τον Μάιο 2018. Τα σεμινάρια εστιάζουν σε θέματα που συνδέονται με την έννοια της κινητικότητας, όπως και με το πως αυτή διαμορφώνεται μέσα από δημόσιες αναπαραστάσεις, καθημερινές προσλήψεις, αλλά και παρερμηνείες, σχετικά με την κρίση. Εξ ου και θέτουμε τα εξής ερωτήματα: Είναι η κινητικότητα μία έννοια που θα πρέπει να τεθεί σε κρίση, ή/και είναι μια έννοια που θα πρέπει να μελετηθεί ή να αποτελέσει αντικείμενο σκέψης ως αποτέλεσμα πολλαπλών κρίσεων; Για παράδειγμα, πώς η κινητικότητα και η κρίση διαμεσολαβούνται, ορίζονται και επανανοηματοδοτούνται μέσα από τη φυλή, την εθνικότητα, την τάξη, το φύλο, τη σεξουαλικότητα, τη σωματική αρτιμέλεια, και τη θρησκεία; Εν γένει, τι είδους υποκείμενα/υποκειμενικότητες αναδύονται ως αποτέλεσμα τόσο της κινητικότητας όσο και της κρίσης;

Θέτοντας τόσο την έννοια της κινητικότητας όσο και αυτήν της κρίσης υπό κριτική διερεύνηση, και άρα χωρίς να τις θεωρούμε δεδομένες, τα σεμινάρια έχουν επίσης στόχο να προσεγγίσουν ζητήματα που σχετίζονται με τα ακόλουθα ερωτήματα αλλά δεν περιορίζονται σε αυτά:

Από τη μία πλευρά, πώς αλλάζει η έννοια της κινητικότητας σε συνθήκες πολέμων και επαναστάσεων τόσο σε μακρά διάρκεια όσο και στη σύγχρονη περίοδο, όπου παρατηρείται έντονα το ανησυχητικό φαινόμενο της εκ νέου ανάδυσης εθνικισμών, ξενοφοβίας, νεοφιλελεύθερης διακυβέρνησης και εντατικοποίησης των συνοριακών ελέγχων; Για να το θέσουμε διαφορετικά, συνδέεται η κινητικότητα με την ελαστικότητα, την προσαρμοστικότητα, την κριτική των συνόρων, των ταυτοτήτων και της έννοιας του ανήκειν ή αποτελεί το βίαιο αποτέλεσμα αυτών των διαδικασιών; Επίσης, υπάρχει κινητικότητα στην ακινησία, στην αναμονή, στη στασιμότητα και στην καθήλωση;

Από την άλλη πλευρά, λαμβάνοντας υπόψη ότι η έννοια της κρίσης έχει πρόσφατα χρησιμοποιηθεί είτε για να περιγράψει τον έλεγχο του κεφαλαίου, τα μέτρα λιτότητας και την εν γένει εξαθλίωση της ζωής, είτε για να σημασιοδοτήσει τη φτώχεια και την απώλεια που είναι αποτέλεσμα της βίαιης μετανάστευσης, διερωτόμαστε τα εξής: Ποιες είναι οι επιστημολογικές και μεθοδολογικές δυσκολίες στη χρήση της έννοιας της κρίσης ως πρίσματος κατανόησης και ανάλυσης της κινητικότητας, των θεσμών, του βίαιου εκτοπισμού, της επισφάλειας και της απαλλοτρίωσης;

Θέτοντας τα παραπάνω ερωτήματα, τα σεμινάρια έχουν στόχο να διαπραγματευτούν με κριτικό τρόπο ζητήματα που σχετίζονται με την πολυπλοκότητα της τρέχουσας οικονομικής και προσφυγικής κρίσης μέσα από την παρουσίαση εν εξελίξει και ολοκληρωμένων επιστημονικών μελετών διακεκριμένων ακαδημαϊκών. Ειδικότερα, οι παρουσιάσεις περιλαμβάνουν κριτικές προσεγγίσεις της έννοιας του «παγκόσμιου Νότου», της «Ευρώπης», της (νεο)αποικιοκρατίας και του (νέο)φασισμού· ιστορικές προσεγγίσεις σε μικρο- και μακρο-κλίμακα που βάζουν σε πρώτο πλάνο συνέχειες και ασυνέχειες κατά τον 20ο και 21ο αιώνα· σύγχρονες αναλύσεις τεχνολογιών διακυβέρνησης και των επιπτώσεων της βιοπολιτικής στο φαινόμενο της μετανάστευσης και της προσφυγικότητας· προσεγγίσεις που εξετάζουν τις δυναμικές της λεγόμενης «μεταναστευτικής κρίσης» στον αστικό και κοινωνικό χώρο των πόλεων «υποδοχής»· έμφυλες και κουήρ αναλύσεις της πολιτότητας και της δημοκρατίας· ανθρωπολογικές αναλύσεις της πολιτικής οικολογίας και της κινητικότητας των ζώων· τέλος, κριτικές προσεγγίσεις της σχέσης που δημιουργείται μεταξύ της τέχνης, του πολέμου και της πολιτικής. Σε κάθε σεμινάριο, δύο προσκεκλημένοι/ες ομιλητές/τριες θα απευθύνουν ζητήματα που αφορούν την πολυπλοκότητα των παραπάνω διεπιστημονικών ζητημάτων, ενώ μετά τις ομιλίες θα ακολουθήσει συζήτηση με το κοινό. Σε ορισμένα σεμινάρια, θα προστεθούν συνεδρίες συζήτησης για την κρίση και την κινητικότητα από πολιτικούς εκπροσώπους, ακτιβιστές και ΜΚΟ, καθώς και θα διοργανωθούν εκθέσεις τέχνης και προβολές ταινιών (παρακαλούμε ελέγχετε τις ανακοινώσεις σε κάθε σεμινάριο για περισσότερες πληροφορίες). Η κράτηση θέσης δεν είναι απαραίτητη. Όλοι και όλες είναι ευπρόσδεκτοι/ες.
